The next day, the prince, who was very much in love, went to the princess’s palace, and asked to see her. She received him with great kindness, and they talked together for a long time. At last the prince said, “I love you so much that I cannot live without you. Will you marry me?”

The princess was much surprised, but she answered, “Yes, I will marry you, if you can do one thing for me.”

“What is it?” asked the prince.

“You must bring me the golden apple that grows on the tree in the garden of the King of the Golden Mountain,” said the princess.

The prince was very much disappointed, for he knew that it was impossible to get the golden apple. But he said, “I will try to get it for you.” So he took leave of the princess and set out on his journey.
